This is probably an insanely stupid question, and I'm sorry if it is :( I have recently taken intrest to the gothic subculture, and wanting to explore it further. Do you have any tips for someone wanting to express their-self but unsure where to start with this large, beautiful subculture? Thanks much! x

I'm not sure if this has been said before, but what bothers me about people thinking Goths are depressed is that they don't seem to understand what depression really is. It can happen to anyone. I've known plenty of people who were depressed and none of them were even remotely Goth. Just putting this out there :)

I have a question. A lot of goths use Ancient Egyptian imagery and symbols, but is it cultural appropriation if it's from an ancient culture?

There seems to be two different points being raised here, so I shall answer both :) Goths do use...

in regards to 4, as a black person and also a very dark colored person as well. I usually dont really feel welcomed because I dont at all fit into the ghastly pale stuff and dont really have the same type of hair options. I know most goths dont say "Oh man I hate black people" but the feeling I get when I walk into a room and get double takes... its not a good feeling, adn when people are fine with me, I feel its less "your you and thats fine" but "how quirky goth black guy."

4- It's kind of awkward being black and goth. I can't have the ghostly pale skin, obviously. Plus, black people have a HUGE issue whenever you're not the black stereotype, or listen to rap. They ALWAYS assume you listen to rap. I'm like "LOOK AT ME!" I don't relate to a lot of people in my own race. And, don't take this the wrong way, but I feel like I can't not dress goth, or "normal black guys" will mistake me for "like them" and hit on me. I also sometimes wish I was white.

It really upsets me hearing about people who don’t feel accepted within the Gothic subculture, or...

i got involved with the goth subculture because i like the sound that i'd discovered and wanted to hear more, better music with that kind of vibe and... idk, crunchyness? i got into evanesance, and then three days grace, bullet for my valentine, things like that. then i discovered bauhaus, and sisters of mercy. oh. my. god. ~so that's my story ^^ also, i don't think goths are all doom and gloom? some of us are really cheerful. i'm running out of letters, so i'll stop- but i hope i helped!
